VOLUNTEERING
Volunteer to clean up Lake Merritt.
Volunteers are needed to help clean the lake!
Keeping the Lake clean depends on you. Each month, thousands of pounds of trash accumulate in Lake Merritt. It is removed by retired folks, professionals, housewives, school children, civic organization members, and people just like you. If you don't volunteer, the trash will stay in the lake.
How to Volunteer
Call (510) 238-2290 to schedule an event for your group, or come as an individual to one of our regularly scheduled events.* And, you may work alone by using one of our four "Self Cleaning Stations" where you will find gloves, trash bags, barrells and nets. The combination is 1314. Meet at the 2nd floor of the Sailboat Clubhouse, 568 Bellevue Avenue in Lakeside Park. It's the first big, blue building on the right. Go up the stairs at the end of the parking lot. If you see the duck pond, you have gone about 1/2 a block too far.
*Events are held every Tuesday at 10:30 and every Saturday at 10:00.
What we provide
The Institute provides gloves, custom made nets, several pairs of hip waders (sizes 7 - 11), trash bags, and trash cans. For new volunteers, an educational presentation is given. Maps showing the area of shoreline to be cleaned are also furnished, and we give instruction on "Netscoop" (which is not at all like Netscape).
To receive our free monthly newsletter
Send us your e-mail address and your name will be placed on our volunteer list. You will then receive a monthly Volunteer Letter by e-mail, featuring "Volunteer of the Month" and monthly trash removed totals.
