Dear Lake Volunteer:
It Takes All Of Us...To Keep Lake Merritt Clean
Like the people surrounding this page, the watershed surrounds Lake Merritt. Because it drains into the Lake, a dirty watershed gives us a dirty Lake. But if we all work together to keep the streets, sidewalks and creeks clean, Lake Merritt will be clean.
NOVEMBER TRASH TALK
A total of 152 volunteers removed 155 bags of trash and other junk totalling 5,360 pounds from the Lake. Remember, we count on volunteers like you to keep Lake Merritt clean. If it has rained recently, plan to join us on a calendar date, or organize a work party and use the self cleaning stations (lock combination 1314).
Watershed Inspectors Needed
In November, we reported another spill white material (paint?) at Glen Echo creek, and a sewage leak at the same location. City inspector William Madison traced the sewage leak to the Veterans Memorial Building, and the faulty lateral sewer was repaired. You can help keep Lake Merritt clean by reporting incidents such as these. For an on-going spill of oil, paint, antifreeze etc. Call 911. To report previous dumping on the street, sidewalk etc. Call inspector Madison at 238-6544.
Who knows, if we can get the watershed and creeks clean enough, it may even be possible for salmon and steelhead to spawn in the creeks running through your backyards.
