January, 2000

Dear Lake Volunteer:

NOVEMBER TOTALS
One hundred fifty nine volunteers attacked trash in the Lake and scooped out 251 bags of the nasty stuff. When it was all over and weighed at the Davis Street Transfer Station, we had removed 6,180 pounds. Included in our booty were: A boat rudder, an un-identified floating object, a stereo, a 6 ft. long landscape log, lots of leaves, dozens of tennis (and other) balls, a CD case with CD's, a coconut tied up in clothing, a fire extinguisher, a bike wheel, many turtles (some dead, some alive), a jacket and a 27 inch long salmon.

We started with a rented truck and the wrong nets.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
Albert Chiu has been a reliable volunteer for several months now. Like many of us, he walks the Lake frequently, and noticed two things; trash in the Lake from litterheads (ugh!) and our bulletin boards offering an opportunity to clean it up. Albert took the challenge. On Tuesdays you can see him out there, often in hip boots, scooping away. We haven't kept track of how many bags of trash he has personally removed, but if it were still there, you would notice it in the Lake. He has made a difference. With a keen eye for what doesn't belong in the water, he picks out bottles from the muddy bottom like a professional. As the start of a new tradition this year, Albert will receive a free pass to the Grand Lake Theater. Thanks Al.
